American Fiction

Bubble wrap is typically used to protect fragile items, and I used this as a metaphor to represent how people's prejudices remain unbroken. By filling the bubbles with liquids of different colors, I showed how these prejudices can get even stronger. I used blue for optimism and red for negativity, but even these meanings are stereotypes. Who decided blue should mean something positive and red should mean something negative? So, I mixed both colors in one bubble to challenge these ideas and make people think differently about them.

Typography

I chose Franklin Gothic ATF for its bold, classic look, which reflects the cultural themes of “American Fiction,” like identity and societal expectations. Bebas Neue adds a modern feel, complementing the film’s critique of stereotypes and distorted perceptions. Together, these fonts balance tradition and modernity, much like the film’s exploration of old and new ideas.

Process

This was my first experience using photography as the primary material for creating a title sequence. The process began with capturing and selecting the photographs, which formed the foundation of the sequence. I then moved into post-production, where I used Lightroom extensively for color correction to refine the mood and tone of the images. Finally, I brought the visuals into Photoshop to focus on type treatment, ensuring the text integrated seamlessly with the visuals while enhancing the overall aesthetic of the sequence.
